BIO

Fanni Kopácsi (Budapest, 1991) is a Hungarian contemporary artist. She studied fine arts at the Secondary School of Visual Arts in Budapest, graduating with a specialization in bookbinding. After completing her studies, she developed her own artistic practice through years of experimental research. In 2022, she was awarded First Prize in the Versiona Thyssen competition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid, and in 2024 she was selected as a finalist for the Agbar Prize at Palau Martorell in Barcelona. Her work has been exhibited internationally in public institutions and private galleries, including New Art Exchange in Nottingham and Galería Uxval Gochez. She currently lives and works in Palermo, Italy.

STATEMENT

Kopácsi works at the intersection of textile sculpture, painting, and installation. She uses reclaimed fabrics, clothing, and domestic materials collected directly from people, the streets and her own life, assembling and transforming these materials through draping and hand-stitching. The works take on anthropomorphic forms that engage with the tradition of sculptural relief and classical iconography, often drawing on collective religious and mythological symbolism rooted in Western visual culture.

She is interested in fabric as both veil and archive – absorbing touch, memory, and time, while pointing toward a dimension that exceeds their purely material existence, operating on a psychological level as well. These materials can be understood as manifestations of the unconscious—of what is hidden or marginalized, both in individual and collective experiences. Through processes of recovery and reassembly, discarded elements become contemporary relics of an emotional archaeology of the present. The act of stitching thus takes on a symbolic meaning of care and healing, becoming a reflection on the human condition through the material traces of everyday life.

Throughout her work, there is a desire to restore a sense of enchantment and wonder: the possibility of marveling at the world once again through what lives on the edge: what is fragile, forgotten or marginalized.
